The raw-water pump impeller pushes cooling water through your engine — and its flexible vanes harden and wear with every hour run. A failed impeller is the single most common cause of marine engine overheating, so it's a replace-on-schedule item (roughly each season or 200 hours) and one every boat should carry a spare of. Kits usually include the cover gasket or O-rings needed to refit.
